A harlot by description who possessed the heart to believe, trust and show compassion, an attitude of hospitality and a roof to bring salvation. These were enough for God to use in changing and rewriting her story.
Before attempting to cross the Jordan, Joshua sent out spies to check out Jericho before attacking it. After the men had surveyed the city, they spent the night in the house of Rahab, a prostitute!
Imagine a holy God using a person of Rahab’s reputation to fulfil His plan and purpose. This makes proof of the fact that God sees beyond our outward appearances and actions and can use even the lowly and outcast in the society to carry out His plans and purposes.
Rahab took the risk of hiding the spies and lying to the king to protect them. Someone may ask, how is risk taking related to her faith?
They all received the news about how God delivered the Israelites from Egypt with a mighty and strong hand, the miracles God performed for the Israelites and the great victories God has given the Israelites over mighty armies of nations around.
Instead of being bound with the chains of fear as the people of Jericho, she accepted to be identified with the God and people of Israel. She therefore risk her life to save the spies from the armies of Jericho. And by this simple action, she was not only save when the entire city walls came trembling down and it’s occupants were totally destroyed, but her family that came under her roof were also saved.
As a result, God honoured her beyond the level of her understanding on account of her faith. Because she believed in the God of Israel to saved, she did not perish.
“By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.” Heb 11:31 KJV
God can also use you no matter you background, past and present life for good works, if you will only believe in Him, trust His word as truth and surrender your will to Him.
