‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be
come one’, Genesis 2:24.
There is a school of thought that ‘marriage is not compulsory’, so I ask , is there an element of Truth in this thought?
Genesis 2:24 is the first place marriage was mentioned, God in his infinite wisdom created marriage and gave the rules out accordingly, there must be a leaving, then cleaving and then becoming one.
The Bible goes on to ask, ‘can two walk together? Unless they agree’, so we see here again that it lies
with us to choose who we want to walk with and marry eventually.
Marriage is a good choice and an institution created by God to continue humanity. Many people go into marriage with varied reasons, some for the fun of it, others because they are aging, some because friends are marrying, to honor God, etc. Knowing the purpose for which one wants to marry defines the marriage and how to pray to bring into being your wishes, so before you go into marriage, have a purpose, then
pray and work to bring the purpose into being.
1 Corinthians 7:8-9, ‘therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them to abide even as I. But if they cannot contain themselves, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to burn’, this explains to us that marriage is a choice and a good choice for that matter.
Now, let’s talk about people who used marriage to make a difference. Let’s look at the story of Queen Esther, she got married to the king because of the favor of God on her life. She didn’t relax after marrying the king
so much so that in all her comfort as the queen, she still fasted for favour from her husband, the king, and got Israel saved by that gesture. So through her sacrifice, Isreal got saved, so we must get to know our prayer life must not halt after marriage but be stronger and we must continously seek the face of God before and in our marriage.
Ruth,is another woman to be studied in marriage, after losing her husband she decided to continue cleaving to his family. This speaks to how we relate with everything around our marriages, do we see them as our own? Do we do for them as we want it to be done for us?
Let it be recorded that, because these two came together, peace has been sustained, greatness has been sustain, love has been
sustained because Ruth decided in her heart and followed her in-law Naomi till the end and God
honored her. Through the lineage of Ruth and Boaz, we had the Saviour Jesus.
