Our individual actions, a collective victory
It is the teacher’s responsibility to cause a student to learn. How students apply what has been taught reveals how he/she understood the instruction given.
We all in one way or the other do find ourselves either guiding or providing instructions to others. From parents, professional teachers, the matured to little children, do find themselves in the position of providing guidance and instruction.
One of the great truths I picked from my research of the “principles of learning and teaching” is the law of application. In the law of application, the teacher is to present to the student how to apply the information received.
When the statement “it is the teacher’s responsibility to cause the student to learn” was made, I kept asking myself how. Because the only way to measure if a student has grasped what is taught is when they start bearing or showing the fruit of it.
When we started facing some challenges at church, leadership decided to solve it by selecting specific topics to teach during our meeting days. I happened to be part of the bible study teachers. After teaching this topic for months, we never saw any change in character and attitude.
Whiles researching this topic, I was enlightened on the reason why we were not effective in achieving our stated goals. I realized that we just presented them with raw content (what is) and not the application (how-to). We failed because we didn’t show them how to apply the information we presented.
To be more effective in correcting wrong beliefs by presenting the right doctrine and correcting wrong behavior by promoting the right behavior, we must present in our teachings, guidance, instructions, and writings not less than 50% application as the disciples did in their Epistles.
The letters of the Apostles to the various churches, they did not just raise issues of their conduct but gave them practical steps in dealing and overcoming the problems. This is what we ought to be doing, providing practical solutions to the world. We are not just called to light of this world because we are revealing the mistakes of the world, but to provide a solution.
Let’s all join hands in providing a solution to the problem the world is confronted with. Let us double-check facts before sharing. let us encourage one another by spreading the good news and not spread fear. Let us show love to one another because perfect love casts out fear. We shall overcome together.
