There are certain people that should only stay in the vicinity of the outer court of your life, they have no business passing beyond the outer court. You cannot afford to be friends with everybody. There are many of us who are so weak-willed, we are friends to everybody when God has spoken to you about certain associations. When God gives you an instruction and you don’t obey, you won’t hear His voice again, you will be hearing other voices.
That’s the way it’s been since the beginning – the Spirit and the Word working together. Think of the creation narrative in the very first chapter of Genesis. The Holy Spirit hovered above the face of the deep when God spoke all things into existence. God the Father gave the command, the Word was released, and the power of the Holy Spirit partnered with that Word to bring about creation.
Imagine a holy God using a person of Rahab’s reputation to fulfil His plan and purpose. This makes proof of the fact that God sees beyond our outward appearances and actions and can use even the lowly and outcast in the society to carry out His plans and purposes.
The church has often stressed the priority of faith over works, and this passage helps us understand why faith takes priority. Without faith, works will never happen. We have no motivation to do anything if we don’t “believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” We do what we do because we are sure God is there. We live to please God because we believe God will reward those who seek him.
Our lives may be cluttered with many things, and it may be lacking in many important things too, of which we may not be aware. In case this is so, Apostle Simon suggests that we start adding. This takes diligence and hard effort. A Christian doesn’t become mature and worth something to the Lord’s work by dozing or being lazy. It rather takes diligence, discipline and dedication.
We sometimes use the word “love” quite casually; for example, “I love ice cream.” We use even use the term “making love” to refer to a sexual act that may have nothing to do with real love. The writer warned in Hebrews 13:4 that engaging in sex outside of marriage invites God’s judgement.
We are reminded in the next verses that the love of money is also a temptation to which we must not succumb.
The peace of God is part fruit of the Spirit that holds others together. That is why almost every attack of the enemy is designed to steal our peace first. Satan knows if he can rob us of our peace we will quickly lose our patience, love, faith, and so on. That is why we are told in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” As long as we abide in the peace of God, our hearts and minds will remain in Christ Jesus.
Truth is we have many Christians who know about God, but only a few know Him in a personal and intimate way. There is no higher or more exalted goal than knowing God in an intimate way as God reveals to us through Jeremiah, the prophet.
The glory of the new covenant is so superior that the old faded into insignificance by comparison.
The Holy Spirit, the most misunderstood Personality. The Holy Spirit is not just a force, when you learn His presence, you will know how cheap Satan is.
