God has always demonstrated His kindness, favour and goodness toward His people because of His gracious nature. But the grace of God that has come to the Church through Christ was never experienced by the Old Testament saints.
10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, WHO PROPHESIED OF THE GRACE THAT WOULD COME TO YOU, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 TO THEM IT WAS REVEALED THAT, NOT TO THEMSELVES, BUT TO US THEY WERE MINISTERING THE THINGS WHICH NOW HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO YOU THROUGH THOSE WHO HAVE PREACHED THE GOSPEL TO YOU BY THE HOLY SPIRIT– sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
God revealed the grace intended for us to the Old Testament prophets, and they prophesied of it. What was revealed to them created curiosity that even angels desired to look into it. Know this, it was revealed to the Old Testament saints, but it was not meant for them. Thus they never experienced this grace in their time.
This is the true grace of God that has been made available to us through Christ’s personality and His redemptive work.
John 1:14, 17
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH. 17 For the law was given through Moses, BUT GRACE AND TRUTH CAME THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.
Through Moses, God’s revelation of the Law was given to the people of lsrael. Moses’ personality and good works were not involved in the giving of the Law. He served just as a mediator, and the Law was given to lsrael, and not to any other nation or the Church. But through Christ’s personality and His finished redemptive work, the grace of God in truth has been provided to us. And we know and understand this grace through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:4-6 (NLT)
4 For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people, 5 which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.6 This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you FIRST HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD’S ’s WONDERFUL GRACE.
The Amplified Bible puts the verse 6 this way:
6 Which has come to you. Indeed, in the whole world [that Gospel] is bearing fruit and still is growing [by its own inherent power], even as it has done among yourselves ever since the day YOU FIRST HEARD AND CAME TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THE GRACE OF GOD IN TRUTH.
What believers need is, to be accurately and intimately acquainted with this true grace of God that has come to us in Christ. We should entirely depend on the Holy Spirit to make this grace real to us. And we must be steadfast and persevere in this grace to experience the glories that are supposed to follow us.
